• Sandflies on South Island west coast can be brutal — bring repellent.

• Routine vaccines only. No special requirements.

• Learn about Māori culture — attend a hangi (feast) and experience a haka.
• Road trip the South Island — Milford Sound, Queenstown, Mount Cook, Wanaka.
• Try a meat pie, fish and chips, pavlova, and flat white coffee.

• Don't compare NZ to Australia — Kiwis have their own proud identity.
• Don't underestimate distances — the country is longer than many people think.
• Don't skip biosecurity declarations at customs — fines are heavy.

Tipping is NOT expected. Service staff are paid proper wages. Rounding up or small tips for exceptional service are appreciated but never expected.

Very casual. New Zealanders are the most laid-back dressers. Outdoor gear is perfectly acceptable everywhere. Jandals (flip-flops) are practically the national shoe.

Secular society. Christian heritage but very diverse. Māori spiritual traditions (tapu and mana) are respected. Remove shoes when entering a marae (Māori meeting house).
